What is an Ecstatic Dance?

An ecstatic dance is the modern terminology for moving the body only carried by the music, rather than by your Mind. The dancer has no concern for how he/she looks or what others might think. It's not the head that dictates the movement but rather, the body that expresses itself freely. As we store emotions in the body, taking the shape of pain or illness, the dance provides a safe space to let go of anger, resentment, stress or anxiety. Abandoning the mind provides a sense of release and let us feel a sense of harmony which is close to Ecstasy. Hence the name. In that sense, it's the true definition of Meditation, which gives birth to heart and mind resonance.

A long history of Ecstatic Dance

We, humans, have always used dance as a way to heal and connect.

In Asia, Zen Buddhist monks have a similar advanced meditative practice called Reido: Monks wander the forest and dance to the sounds within. Tribal communities use dance and music to convey emotion, celebrate and unify the community. The dance acts as release of the nervous system and a place to replace negative emotions with positive emotions and stronger a feeling of bliss. Often a trance follows, allowing to transcend our human condition and connect to the spirits
